Skills to be developed by a law student
As an aspiring lawyer, It is important to challenge your beliefs and think out of the box. To 'Think like a Lawyer' a few skills need to be developed during your time in law school. Developing these skills will help you stand out from your peers.
#1 Research and Analysis Skill
In the legal world, whether in law school or after law school, you need to read volumes and volumes, conduct analysis, and then process this information into something useful. Developing this skill will help you remove something relevant out of complex information. This skill can be useful during your assignments in law school or even help you explain information to your client.
#2 Communication Skill
The ability to communicate clearly is definitely a skill to add to your success in the legal field. Without strong written and oral communication skills, you will find it difficult to work as a lawyer efficiently. Lawyers need to be effective listeners and persuasive speakers hence participating in debate, negotiation, and moot courts has helped me develop confidence while speaking in public.
#3 Commercial Awareness
Commercial awareness denotes awareness of recent happening in the surroundings and developments in the business world. Recruiters consider commercial awareness as a significant skill possessed by a law graduate.
#4 Time Management
The legal world requires lawyers to be multi-taskers. I can't stress enough how important this skill is. Lawyers need to complete work assigned to them but, they need to know how to prioritize their work. This can be done by participating in extra-curricular activities alongside academics. During my first year, I took part in legal and non-legal extracurricular activities which helped in developing time management skills in no time.
#5 Socializing Skill
The field of law demands networking among one another. Socializing will help you showcase your vital skills and help make a name in the legal industry. During this pandemic, the need of the hour demands one to socialize through electronic means. One can do so by building a strong social profile on sites like LinkedIn etc.
No doubt slowly but steadily, one will be able to develop these skills during their time in law school. A law graduate with these skills will be able to attract the attention of recruiters from many law firms.
