Debunking myths about law school

Law school has always been portrayed as having nerds with no work-life balance. This is a total misconception as, in reality, law school is much more than case analysis or reading volumes and volumes. It provides students with opportunities to develop themselves beyond the legal world. Below are a few myths that are debunked by a law student.

#1 Work Work and Work
It is believed that law school is only reading, case analysis, coursework, exams repeat. But, this is not entirely true. Undoubtedly, opting for the course of law means opting for heavier reading than the usual courses, but this does not mean that one needs to sacrifice social life. To effectively manage everything, one needs to develop the skill of time management. Being an international student in the UK, with a proper schedule, I was able to manage my academics alongside extra-curricular like debating, negotiation, etc.

#2 It's Competitive
Undoubtedly, law school is very competitive as from day one till the day you land with a training contract many obstacles come along your way, but all these can be dealt with easily. During your time in law school, you should try and build strong connections among your peers these are the people who go through the same stress as you and can be a great source of support to you. Whilst I do know that it is essential to maintain your position at the top but, that does not mean you climb the ladder of success by stepping on your classmates.

Maintaining contacts will not only help you build lifelong relations but, you never know that these classmates in the future might be your coworkers, opposing counsel, or even help you get a contract in their firm. Even though there is competition in law school, a dose of healthy competition will only bring out the best qualities of a law student

#3 Either Solicitor or Barrister
It is always thought that graduating from law school will only lead towards the route of being a solicitor or a barrister. This is no truth each and every aspect of life is touched by the field of law. Obtaining a degree of law does not unlock doors in the legal world but also outside the field of law. Studying law does not only provide law students with legal knowledge but also, research, problem-solving, etc.

#4 Arguing should be your forte
I was constantly reminded that I was too nice to be in law school and that law school is only meant for the ones who argue. The truth is that the skill of arguing is one of the essentials skills to be developed by a law student, but this kind of arguing is a totally different affair it is not the way people think. Arguing the legal world requires a lot of research, analysis, writing, etc.

#5 Law students live a polish life
Many, after having watched Suits believe that lawyers live a very posh life just like Harvey Spector, but that is not the truth. Lawyers don't dress up in suits every day. With all the reading and submissions we barely can survive the term. No doubt one can have brains like Harvey Spector, but not all will roam with matching outfits like Elle Woods. The legal world that is portrayed on TV is just opposite to the actual legal world.

Myths around law school will be for as long as one can think of. It is ultimately for you to decide what law school is from your perspective.
