How to maintain School - Life Balance
Life in law school is nothing like college or any other undergrad. It is very challenging yet adventurous. I can't stress how important it is to maintain a balance between school and life. This will not only help to stay focus and on track but, it will also help to maintain a good functioning of the body. While this may not seem easy at the start but, it is worth the reward. Make school-life balance your priority right from the beginning and, it will be easier to maintain in the long run.
I too faced many challenges as I was studying 1L from my home country. Because of the time difference, it was in no way easy for me to maintain a school-life balance in term 1 but, I remained persistent and finally managed to have a successful 1L of distance learning. Here are the tips that helped me maintain school-life balance.
Time Management
If you want to shine in law school alongside having a social life you need to master the art of time management. One can easily master this art by maintaining a physical planner or a calendar on their phone.
My planner helps me prioritize my task for the day, sets an entire day's schedule, keeps track of my health, gives me a lot more extra space to jot down ideas for my blog, etc. Sticking to the daily planner has made sure that I can have the most productive day.
Make relationships a Priority
Everyone has some kind of relationship. Some are leaving their parents and going abroad for studies just like me, some married or even a parent, some in a committed relation, relation with friends, etc. It is really easy to ignore our loved ones during the hustle and bustle of school life. They won't always understand the reason behind your hustle and might feel hurt if neglected. This, in the long run, might even cost your valuable relations with them.
Your friends and family are the ones you can turn to during your failures. Make sure to make them feel like they are an important part of your life. However busy your day was, a short call to your parents or loved ones or even a small text will bring a smile to their face.
Experiment
Make sure to keep a day to yourself (Saturday or Sunday). On this day make time for life outside the law school. Experiment by trying your hands at something new or find some fun stuff to keep you entertained. Don't just sit watching Netflix or scroll through your social media handles. Take some time off from the virtual world and get yourself out into the real world. Make some coffee plans with your friends, take a long walk in the park, explore a new place in your town, make some new fur friends, etc. Spend time doing anything fun, free and that will clear your mind for a few hours.
Do activities which are fun and preferred by youyou or even which challenges you so that you don't become the character Jack for the famous quote "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy".
Study smarter not harder
No matter what and how I was studying, I would always end up feeling less prepared before any seminar or exam. This would stress me out and my instant reaction would be 'reaching out for books'. I quickly realized I needed to try and test new methods of learning. It took me days of experimenting but, in the end, I found the right fit for my need.
We all are overwhelmed at the beginning of law school but, weigh you down. Keep experimenting with new methods of learning. Find the right match for your needs, it will help you from getting burnt out and will keep you happier in the long run.
Make school-life balance a priority and you will be thankful as the year goes on. Don't forget the key to success is happy experimenting.
